The 26/11 Mumbai attacks remain one of the darkest days in India’s history—a brutal act of terror that shook the world. While the horrors of that night are well-documented, few discuss the sinister second phase of the attack: an ideological warfare meant to rewrite history.

On November 26, 2008, a group of heavily armed terrorists from Pakistan infiltrated Mumbai via the sea. Their most infamous target was the Taj Hotel, where they carried out a gruesome massacre. These were not ordinary terrorists; they were fidayeen—suicide attackers brainwashed into believing that their violent deaths would grant them eternal glory and a place in Jannat (Heaven). However, beyond the bloodshed, a more dangerous plot was unfolding—a deliberate attempt to brand this attack as “saffron terrorism.” The terrorists were given fake identity cards with Hindu names to mislead investigators. Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker captured alive, carried an ID under the name “Sameer Chaudhary” and had a sacred thread tied around his wrist, a common Hindu ritual symbol. The intention was clear: to frame Hindus for the attack and shift the blame away from its true orchestrators.

This sinister plan was foiled by one man—Constable Tukaram Omble, whose bravery changed the course of history. Armed with only a lathi (baton), he took on Kasab, ensuring his capture at the cost of his own life. If not for Omble’s selfless act, the truth about the attackers’ origins might never have been revealed. Despite undeniable evidence, attempts were made to push a false narrative. A book was even published, claiming the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was behind the attack. Shockingly, a former Congress Chief Minister was involved in promoting this misleading theory.

If terrorism truly has no religion, why was there such a desperate attempt to frame Hindus? Why was there an effort to divert attention from the real perpetrators? Had Kasab not been caught alive, the world might have believed this fabricated story, and an entire community could have been wrongfully vilified.

As we remember the innocent victims of 26/11, we must also recognize Tukaram Omble’s unparalleled sacrifice. His actions did more than just catch a terrorist—they prevented an ideological attack that could have changed India’s history. The truth about 26/11 must be discussed every year, alongside the remembrance of those who lost their lives. Only by confronting past deceptions can we ensure that history is not rewritten to serve false agendas.
