Today in Punjab, a Shiv Sena leader was fatally attacked. While a policeman sat behind him in a car, assailants wielding swords severely injured the leader. Notably, the policeman fled without offering resistance, raising concerns about the protection of Hindus in the region.

It’s important to clarify that the Shiv Sena in Punjab is distinct from the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. The Punjab faction is an organization formed by Punjabi Hindus to advocate for the rights of minority Hindus in the state. During the rise of Khalistani terrorism, agitators committed atrocities against Hindus. Bhindranwale, a prominent figure during that period, had openly threatened Indira Gandhi’s government, claiming he could kill 5,000 Hindus in an hour. Interestingly, Bhindranwale’s posters have been seen in recent farmers’ movements.

The recent attack on the Shiv Sena leader underscores the challenges faced by Hindus in Punjab. The inaction of the armed policeman during the assault further highlights concerns about the reliability of protection for the Hindu community. Such incidents prompt reflection on the need for politics that prioritize Hindu safety and dignity.

Hindus make up about 40% of Punjab’s population. However, in the past 55 years, the state has not seen a single Hindu Chief Minister. In contrast, regions where Muslims constitute over 10% of the population often witness demands for increased representation among legislators and leaders. This disparity raises questions about political representation and the need for Hindus to advocate for their rights.

Historically, Hindus have maintained tolerance and observed religious harmony. This ethos allowed secular parties to dominate politics post-independence. However, the reluctance to address hate crimes against Hindus and the criticism faced by those who voice their grievances have led to questions about the trustworthiness of self-proclaimed secular individuals in India.

Often, hate crimes against Hindus are dismissed under false pretenses, and any Hindu expressing concerns is criticized. In this recent case, even if there’s an element of Hindu hatred, there’s a high possibility that the matter will be suppressed by citing personal reasons. But if it were personal, why did the armed policeman flee from sword-wielding attackers? Which neutral journalist will pose this question to Punjab’s Home Minister?

The implication is that the Hindu community is being silenced and oppressed in various places. How long will this one-sided secularism persist? Every society insists on its just rights, presents its problems to the world, and seeks solutions. So, why are Hindus remaining silent? It’s time to speak up and advocate for our rights.
