Introduction
In a nation where dreams often get buried under the weight of poverty and societal constraints, some rise like flames—bold, persistent, and guiding. One such flame is Biru Dev Dhone, the shepherd’s son from Yamage village, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, who broke barriers and secured a place in the Indian Police Service (IPS) by cracking one of the toughest exams in the country: the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
His story is more than just a tale of success. It’s a resounding example of how a proud Hindu youth, rooted in tradition and driven by purpose, can rise against odds and become a symbol of hope for others.

From Shepherd’s Fields to Civil Service Dreams
Born into a traditional Dhangar (shepherd) community, Biru Dev Dhone was no stranger to struggle. His family owned just an acre of land and earned their livelihood by rearing sheep and goats. His father, Siddappa Dhone, continued the ancestral profession, while his elder brother served in the Indian Army.
Growing up in a modest household, Birdev’s early life lacked access to basic facilities like consistent electricity. He studied under a dim veranda light and walked long distances to attend school. Despite these challenges, he shone academically—topping his center in Class 10 and excelling in the science stream in Class 12.
Education and Early Responsibilities
After completing his schooling at the local Zilla Parishad and Jai Maharashtra High School, Biru pursued a degree in civil engineering from the prestigious College of Engineering Pune (COEP), graduating in 2020.
To support his family, he took up a job as a postman at India Post, all while holding onto his dream of serving the nation in uniform. Inspired by his brother’s service in the army, Biru set his sights on the Indian Police Service through UPSC.
Struggles of a UPSC Aspirant
Biru’s journey was far from easy. He moved to Delhi to prepare for UPSC, despite financial limitations. Relying on friends and mentors for support, he faced language barriers and lacked polished communication skills in English. But he never stopped.
He downloaded a dictionary app to improve his vocabulary and read extensively. His first two attempts at the Civil Services exam were unsuccessful. But he took each failure as a lesson and refined his strategy.
Shepherd Son Turns IPS Officer
On his third attempt, Biru Dev Dhone cracked the UPSC Civil Services Exam with an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 551 in 2024.
In a poetic twist of fate, Biru was out grazing sheep near Belgaum, Karnataka, when he received the life-changing news. The community celebrated his achievement in traditional style—with a yellow turban, a gifted lamb, and tears of joy.
The Hindu Youth Icon
Biru Dev Dhone isn’t just a symbol of perseverance—he is a modern face of educated, determined Hindu youth. Proud of his roots, devoted to his community, and focused on social upliftment, he proves that a strong identity combined with knowledge and grit can inspire entire generations.
He aspires to join the IPS and dedicate his service to the people, especially the underprivileged sections of society. He believes in “working from the ground up”, transforming villages and empowering youth through education and awareness.
But One Story Doesn’t Define a Path
While Biru Dev Dhone’s rise from a “Shepherd Son to IPS Officer” is nothing short of extraordinary, it’s crucial to note: not every UPSC aspirant needs to walk this path.
Many are now inspired to prepare for UPSC simply because of such stories, without fully understanding the mental, emotional, and financial demands of the journey. UPSC is not just another exam—it requires clarity, years of dedication, sacrifice, and sometimes, a backup plan.
Taking inspiration from Biru Dev Dhone is wonderful—but don’t let it become blind imitation. Seek proper counseling, understand the realities of the exam, and choose your path based on your passion and aptitude, not just admiration.
Shepherd Son IPS – A Role Model, Not a Blueprint
Biru Dev Dhone, a Shepherd Son IPS officer, has earned his place in history as a role model for all UPSC aspirants—especially those from rural, marginalized, and economically weaker sections. His journey highlights that with the right blend of faith, identity, discipline, and ambition, transformation is possible.
But while he is a beacon of hope, his journey should serve as a motivator—not a mold. Walk your own path with clarity, courage, and commitment.
